The Triratna Buddhist Community was founded by Urgyen Sangharakshita. Born in South London in the 1930’s, Sangharakshita realised he was a Buddhist at the age of 16. In 1950, after much searching, he was ordained as a Buddhist monk in India.
Sangharakshita returned to England in 1964 and began to explore how non-sectarian Buddhism could be practiced in the modern world. In 1968 he founded the Western Buddhist Order. His vision was to create a community of practitioners, faithful to the insights of traditional Buddhism, yet also culturally relevant.
The Triratna Community is made up of Order members and all those people, whatever their level of commitment, who attend Triratna Buddhist centres and groups across the world. The Community aims to make the key principles of Buddhism accessible and support each others efforts in friendship.
We aspire to practice a path that can transform self and world.
