Breathworks – Mindfulness for Stress Course

This course is based on Breathworks, the inspiration of Vidyamala, a senior Order member of Triratna, who has suffered chronic back pain for over thirty years due to congenital weakness, a car accident and multiple surgeries.

Breathworks is now an international program, helping people experiencing chronic pain, illness and stress to manage their condition through meditation, body awareness and creative approaches to living.

Lesley Porter is a psychologist training in Breathworks and this is the first time this course is being offered in Adelaide, an opportunity not to be missed. Places are limited, hence the advance notice to contact Lesley and book early to secure a place.

Turning-of-the-Year Retreat, 27th December – 3rd January, 2018!

Mindfully Alive is the theme of our Turning-of-the-Year Retreat, based on the Satipatthana Sutta, the direct path to realisation. This will be the foundation for mindfully exploring our experience over the seven days of this retreat, led by Maitripala from Victoria.

Maitripala visited Adelaide Triratna in February as part of her Buddhas-in-my-Pocket pilgrimage and she has kindly and generously organised her time and her life, so she can come back to South Australia and lead us in this wondrous text and practice.

What would life be like if we could more consistently “keep calmly knowing change?”

keep –      continuity and effort required to remain present
calmly –    becoming free from being driven by desires and aversions to experience
knowing – quality of intelligent awareness
change –  insight into the true nature of things

Join us on this retreat and strengthen your practice towards transforming your life. A solid foundation in the Mindfulness of Breathing and Metta Bhavana meditation practices is a pre-requisite for booking on this retreat.

Starts:     6pm, Wednesday 27th DecemberFinishes: 3pm, Wednesday 3rd January
Venue:    Glenbarr, Strathalbyn

Transforming Self and World

P1010011.JPGTransforming Self and World
themes from the sutra of golden light
This is our new theme for Sangha Nights, starting next Tuesday 20th September. Sangharakshita’s teaching on this sutra was originally given in a series of seminars forty years ago and published in book form twenty years hence, with the following opening sentence on the back cover. “As the earth’s resources are wasted and defiled, as the nations of the world are ravaged by war and hunger, we can afford to give way neither to cynicism nor to despair.”

With clarity and wisdom, Sangharakshita takes this ancient source of inspiration and guidance, translating the images and episodes of this beautiful but mysterious text into a commentary filled with practical insights into many increasingly urgent dilemmas we are facing in the world today. Ecology, economics, morality, politics, culture and government – in a realm of gods and goddesses, kings and dragons, the golden light of absolute reality pours forth, transforming the entire world.

At the same time, if we dream of changing the world, we must start with changing ourselves. For all those seeking to engage in transforming self and world, this text and Sangharakshita’s commentary offer hope, encouragement and a way forward. Join us on Tuesday nights (6.45pm at 96 Halifax St in the city) for some guidance and inspiration and lively sharing of thoughts and reflection. Everyone welcome.

The Journey and the Guide

A new course being offered in September and October

This is Maitreyabandhu’s latest book (the author of Life with Full Attention). This course takes us on a journey of practical week-by-week exercises, focusing on cultivating mindful awareness, knowing ourselves, being happy, integrating and simplifying our lives and truly being ourselves.

This book is for anyone who wants their life to be a journey, an eight week course in Enlightenment, that will take a lifetime to complete.

Maitreyabandhu shares with us the motivation for writing this book “I wanted to try and show in a practical way how we can gain Enlightenment, what it really means to be a Buddhist, how we can make the most of this being human.”

Thursdays, 7pm-9.30pm
8th September – 27th October

96 Halifax St in the city

Cost for the eight weeks

including your personal copy of the book

Our Sangha in August

“Thirty Days of Silence” – This is the title of a talk Dharmamodini will give next Tuesday 2nd August at Sangha Night, sharing some of her experiences from her recent month’s solitary retreat on Kangaroo Island.

On 9th August, participants in The True Individual retreat will share with others what unfolded over the four days, and how they experienced different approaches to going deeper in our understanding of the Dharma and spiritual journeying.

The 16th August will be the date we share in a full moon puja to rejoice in the Buddha’s Awakening and keep alive the freshness and newness of our experience. To quote Sangharakshita “Everything you do is done for the first time, because both you and the situation are different. Everything is happening for the first time.”

The mystery of the second half of August will reveal itself in due course!

Everyone is welcome to join us at 96 Halifax St on Tuesday nights, commencing at 6.45pm, concluding 9.15pm. There is a Drop-In meditation available for anyone wanting instruction in meditation, no experience necessary; this also starts at 6.45pm; please arrive by 6.40pm.

Life with Full Attention course happening again in 2016!

Monday nights, 7pm – 9.15pm
1st February – 21st March
96 Halifax St, Adelaide

unnamedThis practical course in Mindfulness will be our first course in the new year. The focus this course is how to put mindfulness into practice in the actual conditions of our day-to-day life, in such a way that it makes a difference to how you experience daily living.

The course teaches you how to pay closer attention to your experience, by introducing and exploring different aspects of mindfulness, including awareness of the body, feelings, thoughts and the environment.

Life with Full Attention provides both a starting point for anyone new to the practice of mindfulness, as well as a valuable refresher for those with some prior experience.

Cost of $200 for the eight weeks includes your own copy of the book.

Booking is essential and places are limited.

Contact Dharmamodini 0439 839 785 with any queries or to reserve a place.

“The course provided some useful and practical techniques for dealing with anxiety, expectations and judgements; and practical ways to work with overcoming negativity and generating positive states of mind.”

”Maitreyabandhu’s book is humbly honest, poignant and practical – it has inspired and motivated me to learn more.”
